This was fine, but I don't think I'll continue with the series。 I was hoping it would delve more into the personal journey of Light as he rationalizes using the Death Note and killing to hide his identity, etc。 But it seems like it's more about a battle of brains between Light and L。 I'm less interested in that。 This was fine, but I don't think I'll continue with the series。 I was hoping it would delve more into the personal journey of Light as he rationalizes using the Death Note and killing to hide his identity, etc。 But it seems like it's more about a battle of brains between Light and L。 I'm less interested in that。 。。。more

Alright, so normally I usually separate manga into it's many different arcs and then review the arcs themselves。 However, Death Note really only has two major arcs。 3 if you consider the beginning until L shows up but I。。。don't。 So therefore I will be referring to everything in Part 1 as everything that happen pre a certain characters death。 Then Part II will be everything else。 This happens somewhere during the middle of Volume 4 of the Blackened edition I believe。Also, if it wasn't obvious, th Alright, so normally I usually separate manga into it's many different arcs and then review the arcs themselves。 However, Death Note really only has two major arcs。 3 if you consider the beginning until L shows up but I。。。don't。 So therefore I will be referring to everything in Part 1 as everything that happen pre a certain characters death。 Then Part II will be everything else。 This happens somewhere during the middle of Volume 4 of the Blackened edition I believe。Also, if it wasn't obvious, there will be major Spoilers ahead。 So just be wary that I will be talking in depth about the story and using examples from the material to explain my points。 I will try to be vague, but my courtesy of not naming a characters death ends here。Part 1: Chapters 1-58 Rating - 10/10Things I liked-So Death Note has a phenomenal start。 I think the first three chapters are enough to hook anyone who is into this genre of storytelling。 (crime/supernatural/thriller)-It's one of those things where it really does have fantastic suspenseful moments。 Every bit of information is given to us in a concise and appropriate way。 I don't really feel like part 1 ever gets super wordy, except maybe in the later bits。-The characters in part 1 really are just the crème of the crop here。 However, I will say。 Light as a character is so much less interesting when he we are aware of his intentions。 The moment he forfeited the Death Note and therefore his memories was a stupendous way for the audience to be in love with how it's going to turn out。 We KNOW that Light has a plan。 We KNOW that he's looking to get possession of the Death Note again—but how is he going to pull it off? And that is honestly the highlight of part one。-It's like adding a cat and mouse component while playing 3D chess。 L is trying to capture Light who he believes to be the real Kira。 So we get to see L, and Light working together as protagonists all while knowing that at one point, Light will change and become the antagonist。 It's an extremely effective way of making every development have meaning and be that much more engaging。Things I didn't liked-This list will be short, because I really believe that part 1 is nearly flawless。 I just feel like the story finds itself trapped in mountainous amounts of exposition。 We have to explore what L's thinking。 What Light's thinking。 What Ryuk's thinking。 What Light's dad is thinking。 What AIZAWA is thinking。 It becomes a bit too much and there is a bit too much direction and thought put into the thoughts of these characters。Part 2: Chapters 59-108 Rating - 8/10It's hard to compare part 1 and 2 and at the same time very simple。 Both of them take place in the style of the catch a criminal style of story。 Both of them have the battling of two geniuses going at it。 And both of them have very high intensity, nail biting scenes。However, where part 2 truly suffers is based on the information we already know and not the information we don't。 A lot of people think you should stop the series after L's death。 However, I don't subscribe to that idea。 Part 2 is really only made to be not the same it's predecessor BECAUSE it's predecessor was so good。Allow me to explain the three components I felt lead to Part 2 not being as well received and in my personal opinion—not as strong as part 1。1。 We are rehashing the same story。 Except, we are losing a key component。 Light's obliviousness。 I think this matters majorly。 I really found the Light that started to think he may be Kira despite having no memories of it was extremely interesting and endearing。 All of the work done in the beginning went to really just prove this part of the story to be so much stronger。 As I've explained above。 Without that aspect, we are now watching the same cat and mouse story, however, without Light's conflicting character。 We see his every thought。 And at this point he is a straight up psycho path。 So it's not nearly as compelling or interesting to hear him curse out Near for messing with him so much。2。 We get NO new Death Note rules。 Yes, the actual volumes give us little technicalities。 However, we get no actual in story rule additions。 Therefore, for 50+ chapters we are not told ANYTHING new about the Death Note。 In fact, a lot of the same tricks are used again in the same vein as they were used in Part 1。3。 The scope goes bigger, however, it becomes a little convoluted to be involved in so many characters perspectives。 This was a minor issue in Part 1。 However, Part 2 really pushed it to a new extreme。 I think Eliminating half of Near's scenes and focusing more of Mello would have really aided in this。 I think Near was basically a talking head and what made L so engaging was his ability to explain things when they needed explanation。 L took risks and it's what got him killed。 However, as an audience, we enjoy that。 Near took far too little risk。 Sure, he survives。 However, it isn't something that I would give him any clout for。Things I liked-Near is just as, if not more interesting than L。 Now, I know people may think that I'm crazy for thinking that。 But I implore you to reread this story and tell me that L and Near are ANY different。 They act the same。 The tackle situations the same。 They have the same quirks。 They are different characters with different motivations。 But L was interesting because he was the opposition to Light and he was so excellent at it。 Not because HE himself was at all mega interesting。-I enjoyed seeing things from Light's perspective as we the viewers got to see things from a different take on the cat and mouse dynamic。 I do think we got too much of Near。 I wish we would have gotten a lot more Mello, and Near was the secret in the shadows。Things I didn't liked-I explained a big portion of this above so I'll keep this on one final point。 I personally just hated how they caught Light。 It just felt super anti-climatic。 It didn't feel smart。 It felt like the only reason it happened was a stroke of luck and for two super geniuses, I really hated that。 It was really all due to a dude being able to recreate the notebook literally word for word。 That's it。 I love the final scene when Light IS found out。 And eventually what happens with him and Ryuk。 However, I was not a fan whatsoever of HOW they ended up catching him。 Light hiding the note into his watch and killing the dude was a stroke of genius that made me jump out of my seat。 That's how I felt this moment should have been, but it was just kinda contrived。Overall, Death Note is phenomenal。 It's a great shonen and I had a blast rereading it。 I would definitley recommend it。9/10 Overall 。。。more
